WARNING: “Off The Grid” is the Worst Thing to Happen to My Productivity

WARNING: “Off The Grid” is the Worst Thing to Happen to My Productivity

I am officially filing a complaint against Jabulani Ibraham. I picked up “Off The Grid: Enemies to Lovers” thinking I’d read a few pages and go to sleep. Instead, I’ve spent the last six hours wondering why my own life doesn’t involve a mysterious tech mogul in the jungle.

If you like your stories boring and your characters predictable, stay away from this book. Here is why it’s “the absolute worst”:

1. The “Strong Female Lead” is actually… too strong?

Jacqueline Stars is an elite L.A. defense attorney who moves to the jungle with nothing but tactical bags and a “don’t mess with me” attitude. I was promised a disaster, but watching her fierce independence clash with the brutal rainforest was actually… inspiring? It made me want to quit my job and buy a machete. I don’t need that kind of lifestyle crisis right now.

2. The Male Lead is an Unfair Standard

Then there’s Ngo. He’s tall, calm, wears ripped clothes and broken sandals, and looks like a penniless wanderer. But surprise—he’s actually a multi-millionaire tech mogul who ditched his fortune to “reclaim his humanity.” It is physically painful to read about a man this perfect while sitting on my couch eating lukewarm pizza. Jabulani Ibraham, how dare you create a man who offers quiet protection and unwavering support? It’s unrealistic and I’m mad about it.

3. The “Enemies to Lovers” Tension is Torture

The way Jacqueline’s “armor” slowly cracks as her tents collapse and land-grabbers threaten her is agonizing to watch. The slow burn as she realizes she’s falling for the one man she swore she didn’t need is a special kind of literary cruelty. I wanted a quick romance, not an emotional rollercoaster that makes me question my own “independent mentality.”

4. It Makes Me Hate My City

The description of the “toxic, hyper-accelerated corporate landscape of Los Angeles” vs. the “sustainable paradise” of the jungle was too relatable. Now I’m staring at my office cubicle with pure resentment.

THE VERDICT:
If you hate being swept away by a “rich-guy-in-disguise” trope, if you despise rugged jungle survival stories, and if you absolutely don’t want to fall in love with a tall, salt-stained hero named Ngo… do not download this book.

But if you want to ruin your sleep schedule and fall head-first into a “Sustainable Paradise” romance, you can find it on Amazon Kindle. Just don’t blame me when you start looking for five acres of raw jungle on Zillow.

Read it only if you want your heart broken and put back together:
